How Are PET Cups Manufactured?

According to the PET Resin Association (PETRA), polyethylene terephthalate is produced by combining ethylene glycol and terephthalic acid to form resin pellets. These pellets are then heated and can be easily molded into any shape. PETRA also states that when the resin pellets are reheated to a liquid state, the polymer chains can be stretched in two directions.

When the polymer is rapidly cooled while being stretched, the chains freeze in a fixed orientation. Once solidified in this stretched form, the material becomes extremely durable. If PET is held at an elevated temperature while stretched, it slowly crystallizes and becomes opaque, more rigid, and less flexible.
